Flats to rent in the Scottish Borders
The Borders flat market is concentrated in the larger towns. Stone tenements and flats in subdivided Victorian and Georgian townhouses dominate the central streets of Hawick, Galashiels, Kelso and Jedburgh. Above-shop flats are common in the market squares. Modern purpose-built flats appear in the newer developments around the edges of each major town, particularly Galashiels and Tweedbank. The smaller towns and villages have very little flat supply at all — the rental stock there is almost entirely houses.
Where Borders flats are most available
Galashiels has the deepest flat market and the Borders Railway — typical one-bed £400–£575 pcm, two-bed £475–£675. It is the obvious choice for an Edinburgh-priced-out renter who needs to commute regularly. Hawick is the most affordable flat market in the region — one-beds from around £375. Kelso and Jedburgh have a smaller supply weighted toward period stock with character. Melrose has limited supply but commands a premium for the village atmosphere and Tweedbank-station proximity. Tweedbank itself, at the railway terminus, has modern flats popular with rail commuters.
What to check on a Borders flat
Parking is the most common gotcha — town-centre flats often have street-only parking, sometimes with permit zones or short-stay restrictions. Tenement and shared-stair flats usually carry a factor's fee for stair lighting, cleaning and roof maintenance; ask the agent to confirm what is included in rent versus billed separately. EPC ratings on older stone tenements can be C or D — better than rural houses but not always comparable to a modern build. Mains gas central heating is the norm in town flats.
